They say that everything comes back in style, and so we have been casting our mind back to some of the most iconic beauty moments of yesteryear.

“Are you a 90’s baby? Let’s party like it’s 1990, baby!”

Come on a whirlwind trip of the senses back to the 90s with us! We’re not talking getting your Beanie Babies or Furbies out of the attic. We are talking about the very best fragrance and beauty trends from the decade that brought us the Slip Dress, the Scrunchie, Spaghetti Straps and of course… Whitney & Britney.

Welcome to the allbeauty 90’s aesthetic rewind!

THE FRAGRANCE

One of the things we love about fragrance is that they can transport you back to a split second in time. Here are some of the U-L-T-M-A-T-E releases from the 90’s, which you can find right here at allbeauty!

1. Clinique’s best selling fragrance Clinique Happy was released in 1998 with the slogan “Wear Happy and be happy!”. A simple slogan for simpler times! Notes of this heady fruity cocktail include Orange, Blood Grapefruit, Indian Mandarin, Lily-of-the-valley, and Morning Orchid. Happy for Men is its cool, crisp counterpart featuring green notes, sea notes and lime. It was launched in 1999.

2. Dune by Christian Dior and Christian Dior Dune Pour Homme were both released in 1991. They were created as a tribute to Christian Dior’s childhood home and holiday residence - Granville in Normandy. They represent the ultimate 90s beachy scent - that of a garden bathed by the sea! Notes for her include Mandarin, Peony, Vanilla. Notes for him include Sage, Fig Word Bark and Sandalwood.

3. Angel by MUGLER was launched in 1992, in an eye catching star shaped bottle. Considered to be one of the very first sweet perfumes, this unusual gourmand fragrance uses Ethyl Maltol for its angelic candy floss note . The creation of Angel was inspired by memories of carnival and the fair - specifically “the taste of marshmallow, cotton candy and grilled almonds”. It’s partner fragrance, A*Men by Mugler followed a few years later in 1996, containing top notes of vanilla Patchouli and Pure Coffee.

4. If you’re thinking along the lines of sensual fragrances, they don’t get more seductive than Jean Paul Gaultier’s Classique & Le Male. Known as “l’enfant terrible” of haute couture, JPG launched his fragrance line in 1993 with these two ICONS. Two bottles featuring unconventional designs that we just can’t help but love, JPG’s world features well-sculpted torsos wearing striped sailor shirts and exquisite corsets.

5. Launched in 1994, CK ONE was marketed as a citrus aromatic fragrance for women and men - one of the first unisex fragrances. Youthful, simple and fresh, it rejected gender stereotypes - with Kate Moss as its face, this was THE smell of 90’s Teen Spirit.

THE BEAUTY

You can still enjoy a retro moment with some modern products! Capture a slice of the 90s look with us….

“I won't get out of bed for anything less than $10,000” Linda Evangelista

Calling all Supers - Supermodels that is! The 90’s was the definitive era of the Supermodel. From Naomi Campbell & Linda Evangelista to Helena Christensen and Claudia Schiffer, these were the women who graced magazine covers and appeared at all the top fashion shows.

Smoke up the catwalk like it’s 1992 and you’re Christy Turlington in THAT iconic Chanel chain dress. The dress in question is beyond timeless - it graced us with its presence in 2019 when it came out of the Chanel vault out onto the Red Carpet when Lily-Rose Depp wore it to the Met Gala.

Get a modern twist on the look with Yves Saint Laurent’s Libre, the fragrance that wears its very own designer chain. Add a burgundy touch of drama to your lips with M.A.C’s (aptly named for this era, but more on that later) Spice It Up. Define and add smoulder to eyes for a sultry glare with Laura Mercier’s Editorial Intense Clays Eye Palette. For sculpted brows, look no further than benefit’s Great Brow Basics, which will give you perfect 90’s arches!

“Do you prefer fashion victim or ensembly challenged?” Cher Horowitz

Can you name a 90’s American teen drama more iconic than Clueless? The 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma took Regency Novel drama to Beverly Hills. And brought us Cher Horowitz, wearer of eye-catching tartan suits and a personal computerised wardrobe assistant to die for. Cher, portrayed by Alicia Silverstone, regularly appears in pop culture to this day.

We would definitely bet that by the time Cher made it to college, she would be using Anastasia Beverly Hills, the line founded by Anastasia Soare in 1997. For lashes that flutter and a highlight that pops, use the Anastasia Beverly Hills Lash Brag Volumizing Mascara and Glow Kit in Sugar. Make a statement with a bold glittery bottle of Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy Rose and don’t forget that pink lip - we’ve gone out for M.A.C retro matte in Flat Out Fabulous. Any other shade… Ugh, As If!

“I’ll Tell You What I Want, What I Really Really Want” The Spice Girls

Oh Geri!

Is there any look more iconic of Cool Britannia than THAT Union Jack dress Ginger Spice wore at 1997’s Brits? We think not. But the dress is easier to achieve than you might think, apparently Geri made it herself from a teatowel. The mind reels.

The 1990’s were all about Brit Pop and Girl Power - bold and uninhibited. To get the look, go for an amplified lip with M.A.C Amplified lipstick in Dubonnet. Pop a bit of lip gloss into the centre of your bottom and top lip to highlight the area. Make it a tribute to another girl band - Atomic Kitten - with Nars Eternal Red. Lashings of eyeliner and mascara complete the vibe - we love Bad Gals Lash & Line set as it also includes a cheeky blue mini mascara for that touch of 90s Je Ne Sais Quoi as a little extra! Apply to the tips of your eyelashes for the ultimate 90s lash look. Make sure you are rocking an energetic flush by applying benefit’s Sugarbomb Sugar Rush Flush powder to the apples of your cheeks. Sweet!

“Never complain, never explain.” Kate Moss

Probably the most iconic model ever to come out of Great Britain, Croydon’s Kate Moss became a superstar in the mid 90s, due in part to her collaborations with Calvin Klein. Chanel, Dior, Versace, Kérastase, Yves Saint Laurent, Dior…. Kate has worked with them all. Her simple pared back makeup looks in her earlier work really focused on her bone structure and let her face do all the talking.

Looking for simple 90’s chic? Go for a subtle brown lipstick, such as M.A.C Whirl. Add shine to the centre of your eyelids with a clear balm (such as Vaseline) or light up your eyes by applying a pale shell gold eyeshadow. Our favourite is Vermeer by Anastasia Beverly Hills, available as a single shade or in the Modern Renaissance palette. Contour cheekbones with a swipe of benefit’s Hoola bronzing powder and finish off with Calvin Klein’s Obsession for Women.

What a ride through time! The 90’s will always have our heart!
