We talk to Moroccanoil co-founder Carmen Tal about what motivates her to succeed, the women that inspire her and her must-have Moroccanoil products...10 years ago, Carmen Tal found herself away from home with dry, colour-damaged hair when she discovered the amazing benefits of argan oil for her hair. Inspired by the Mediterranean landscape, sea and culture, her goal has been to share the transformative powers of argan oil-infused products with women across the world to help them feel empowered.

What does the beauty industry mean to you?
Like most things, the beauty industry is constantly evolving. For example, over the last decade the beauty business has changed significantly based on ever-changing consumer demands. Today, accessibility and convenience are more important than ever. For us, we strive to continue to expand our offerings as a complete lifestyle beauty brand across all of today’s key consumer touchpoints to fulfil the needs of the modern customer. Nowadays, consumers are also much more educated in their purchases so as a company, transparency is becoming increasingly important.
My greatest inspiration was to listen to the inspiration around me… and to listen to the women around me, for whom I created Moroccanoil – Carmen Tal
What does gender balance mean to you?
I truly believe that being successful in your career or business is independent of whether you are a man or woman – we are equally capable of achieving anything we set our minds to. I am grateful for the fact that my parents raised my brothers and I to believe that anything is possible and did not treat us any differently based on our gender. They encouraged us to tap into our individual creativity and taught us the importance of a strong work ethic. Women and men alike making their way up the ladder should make it a priority to stay constantly informed and always be ready for change – in business today, it’s all about adapting to the constantly changing needs of the marketplace.
What makes a good #girlboss?
I think female business leaders today have an important responsibility to lead and inspire others by example. To me, inspiration is the vehicle for empowerment to pursue one’s dreams, and when you empower women, the sky’s the limit! It truly only takes one moment of inspiration to ignite positive change - the Moroccanoil brand was created from an inspired moment! Additionally, it’s so important for women to support one other – together, we can make an even more profound impact on the world around us.
What motivates you to succeed?
Women who inspire other women to follow their dreams and who are committed to making change for others. I feel most inspired when I meet amazing women who have genuine passion and love for what they do, and aren’t afraid to take risks! I find that passion is contagious, and I think it’s so important to be passionate about whatever it is that you do.
What advice would you give to young women who want to make it within the beauty – or any – industry?
I believe the key to success it to have a strong worth ethic and staying continually focused on your goals. Trust and follow your instincts.
Who inspires you?
I have always had great admiration for Oprah. The countless lives she has touched and the difference she has made in the world is truly remarkable! I think she is one of the most influential, inspirational women in the world today.
